1. What is CBD Hemp Flower?
CBD Hemp flower is non-psychoactive. Unlike it’s psychoactive cousin, marijuana. The cannabis hemp plant is grown to have high levels of CBD (cannabidiol), with a minimal amount of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) (>0.3% THC). You can get the wide-ranging medicinal benefits offered by hemp, with no physically or mentally intoxicating effects.
CBD buds have many uses, although are most often enjoyed smoked. You can also use hemp flower for vaping in dry herb-compatible devices, and also in homemade products, such as edibles, creams and oils.
This post will concentrate on the advantages of different hemp flower intake methods, and also touch upon a wide variety of strains. RESTART CBD offers over a dozen strains โ in a mixture of sativas, indicas and hybrids.
CBD hemp flower (also referred to as CBD buds, CBD flower, hemp buds) are the flowers of female hemp plants which have been specially bred to contain very high levels of CBD and low levels of THC. They also contain very high concentrations of terpenes, flavonoids, and other cannabinoids, and look and smell just like cannabis marijuana!
As you can see in the picture below, it looks just like marijuana, but these are actually considered CBD buds.
2. CBD Hemp Flower is Not Marijuana
CBD hemp flower should not be confused with cannabis marijuana which can produce psychoactive effects and are illegal in many states and countries.
Hemp and marijuana are closely associated with each other because of their origins. Both are genus cannabis. This makes it look like they are the same but they DO NOT produce the same effect.
The difference lies in the THC content. When we talk about CBD flower, we mean a very low level of THC (under 0.3%). which makes it perfectly legal. In that sense, CBD flower is just like any other CBD product.
True hemp is grown specifically for industrial purposes and dates back ten thousand years ago when it was used as a fiber and a food source. Hemp has over 29,000 known uses, making it one of the most versatile plants on the earth.
3. The science behind hemp?
Many people who are unfamiliar with CBD flower often ask if it will get them high. And those who donโt know much about it usually ask why it doesnโt get you high! Here are some important facts!
CBD and THC are both cannabinoids, and produce most of their effects in the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This is a natural system found in humans, cats, dogs, and many other life forms. Researchers have traced it back hundreds of millions of years. The ECS makes it’s own cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids. But plant-based cannabinoids, or phytocannabinoids, also interact in this system.
THC is a substance which initiates a physiological response when combined with the CB1 receptor. That is what makes a person high. This receptor regulates pain, mood and appetite. In contrast, CBD has the opposite reaction, stopping activity at the CB1 receptor. This also explains why regular marijuana strains with higher levels of CBD are less psychoactive.
In the case of CBD-rich hemp flower, the CBD concentration exceeds that of THC by up to 100 times.
4. Why choose CBD Flower?
CBD flower products are appealing if you like the almost instant effects. Hemp flower doesnโt have an addictive opponent and is non-psychoactive. This couldnโt be more different to tobacco which contains nicotine, an extremely addictive compound.
Inhaled CBD responds more quickly than CBD in oils, edibles and capsules. Nothing beats the rapid delivery of cannabinoids into the bloodstream than smoking flower, although vaped CBD kicks in at the same rate. Once in the bloodstream, CBD disperses all over the body, and even into the brain, allowing for several therapeutic effects.
Then there’s the pure pleasure of rolling a CBD joint, and enjoying in the delicious, complex flavors of flower. CBD smoking is therapeutic, but it can also be social, and a healthier option than smoking THC-laden marijuana or nicotine cigarettes.
5. What are the benefits of CBD flower?
One word, bioavailability. When CBD is converted into vapor or smoke, it increases the amount of CBD available for your body to process. The oral bioavailability of CBD is approximately 6% in humans, while its bioavailability via inhalation is 11 to 45%. This means faster, more effective relief, as well as a greater value per milligram.
Vaping or smoking CBD flowers means instant activation. The inhale/exhale factor of breathing in the CBD and slowly releasing it, creates a rhythmic relaxation flow that immediately eases your nerves. The effects of the flower will activate within a few minutes and should last up to a few hours.
There are some very real benefits of CBD flower because, like all CBD products, consumers are using it to help with various ailments and seeing real results. So why choose CBD flower over CBD oils, CBD vape juice, or other options out there?
Thereโs no doubt that CBD is the focus in a CBD flower product, but itโs not the only compound that makes its mark! Also present are a therapeutic mix of other non-intoxicating cannabinoids, including the anti-inflammatory cannabigerol (CBG) and brain-boosting cannabichromene (CBC). These other cannabinoids all play a small role in enhancing ECS function and elevating overall health, and flower is better for them.
And donโt dismiss the terpenes! Itโs these beauties that give RESTART CBD flower such a pleasant scent. Terpenes are aroma molecules, but thatโs not all theyโre good for. These compounds have beneficial effects, and help decide if a strain is a sativa, indica or hybrid.
Recent research suggests flavonoids are also important. Not much is known about the unique flavonoids in hemp, except they appear vital to unlocking the plantโs anti-inflammatory effects.
All these compounds are only found in full-spectrum or all-natural CBD products. And it doesnโt get any more natural or full-spectrum than flower! Unmodified products are also perfect for getting the proposed โentourage effectโ that is touted by many cannabinoid experts.
CBD Flower is natural and organic. While few brands, source their oils from organic CBD buds, with CBD flower you are getting a product that isnโt created in a lab. There is no extraction and you are getting the real natural and organic source of CBD.
6. CBD flower is an excellent alternative for tobacco smokers.
Evidence suggests that some users find smoking CBD flower helps with quitting tobacco. While this can not be confirmed for everyone, itโs definitely worth trying. There are plenty of CBD flower cigarette substitutes available, and CBD flower is certainly more appealing than tobacco. CBD flower, and especially, CBD cigarettes, are cost-effective, fast-acting and can help with healthier habits.
7. CBD Flower Can Help People Relax Without Feeling High
Since there is almost no THC in CBD flower, you wonโt get โhighโ from it.
For many, the high THC levels in a cannabis marijuana flower can make them feel paranoid or anxious. But not all cannabis flower is created equal. You can avoid the anxiety, paranoia and feeling “high” by opting for CBD-rich hemp flower. The idea is to reap the medical benefits without everything else associated with smoking marijuana.
CBD flower can help people relax. In states, where cannabis marijuana is not legal, consumers can purchase cannabis hemp flower that is high in CBD, and low in THC. CBD and THC are just two of over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.
- CBD makes up a sizable portion in the hemp plant.
- CBD-rich flower offers all of the beneficial effects of high-THC flower without the panic attack-inducing effects.
- While CBD rich cannabis flower does contain low levels of THC, the high levels of CBD regulate the effects of THC.
- In fact, if you do feel high from a high-THC cannabis product, you can even use CBD to bring you back down.
- CBD-rich flower can do everything from reduce hangovers to headaches, even for users with high tolerances.
- CBD flower offers consumers a clear-headed experience with incredible benefits.
8. The Entourage Effect.
Itโs true that other CBD products will offer โfull-spectrumโ options with more than just CBD, but the actual amounts of other cannabinoids and terpenes vary. With a CBD flower, you more or less get what nature intended since this is the source of all CBD. Basically, you are assured of getting the full effect.
While many consumers may choose to opt for CBD-only products like a Pure CBD oil, CBD-rich flower may have better effects because of the synergy that occurs between a combination of all of the cannabinoids and terpenes found in the natural plant.
- When smoking or vaping the entire cannabis flower, you get a wide range of therapeutic cannabinoids and fragrant terpenes that work together to influence each otherโs actions.
- CBD also encourages THC to stay longer in the system, helpful for people with chronic conditions.
9. Medicinal Value of High CBD and Low THC Flower
When smoked or vaped, CBD flower offer consumers a clear-headed experience with incredible benefits. CBD flower can also deliver immediate effects for acute symptoms. However, since consuming CBD flower requires inhalation, it may not be the best consumption method for people with respiratory problems, children or the elderly.
10. Indica, Sativa and Hybrid CBD Flower Strains
Indica (night strains), sativa (day strains) and hybrid (day or night strains) are the three terms that distinguish cannabis strains from each other. We use the same terms to describe different high-CBD strains. Every strain has its own unique properties, but in general, you can anticipate these kind of effects.
Indicas: Calm and relaxation are the primary qualities of CBD-dominant indica strains. Combined with a high dose of CBD, the soothing terpenes are excellent for relief. Indica strains may induce some sleepiness, so are best-suited to evening consumption, when you can let yourself fully relax, knowing your work for the day is done.
Sativas: Increased energy is the most popular perk of sativa strains, which are known for having positive mental effects. A cerebral boost is linked with increased clarity and concentration, perfect if you find your mind wandering off when trying to complete tasks. The extra energy is great for getting through a tough day or fighting fatigue.
Hybrids: If sativas are too stimulating, and indicas too relaxing, enjoy the perfect blend with a hybrid strain. Hybrid effects are somewhere in-between, which is ideal if you want a single CBD flower strain that works anytime, anyplace. For example, a hybrid will lower your daytime stress, without making you sleepy like an indica. And just the same, you can get some nice relaxation at night, without completely switching your brain off.
Keep in mind that the only side effect of too much CBD is drowsiness, due to it’s tranquilizing effects. So even a Sativa or Hybrid strain will be relaxing if you consume too much during the day.
11. High CBD Hemp Flower Strains Rich in Terpenes
Thereโs a diverse market out there for CBD flowers. You have sativa vs indica-dominant strains, those more effective for nausea vs pain, and on and on. If youโre using flower, you have a lot to choose from and the CBD buds are targeted and effective.
Special Sauce, Lifter, Hawaiian Haze, Suver Haze, Sour Space Candy, and Elektra are vigorous, terpene-rich strains and, according to Project CBD, many of them produce flower that tips the scales at 16-20% CBD by dry weight. The CBD content of these hemp strains is similar to AC/DC, a preeminent medical cannabis variety (and the great-grandmother of Hawaiian Haze), but the THC content is consistently next to nothing. AC/DC, by contrast, typically contains more than one percent THC, and sometimes as much as 5-6 percent, which means that legally AC/DC doesnโt qualify as hemp.
12. CBD Flower Servings
Everyoneโs ideal servicing of CBD flower is different. Fine-tuning your dose to the milligram isnโt going to happen with CBD flowerโ itโs a natural plant after all, and the CBD-containing trichomes wonโt be distributed precisely. But there are steps you can take to ensure consistent effects.
First, how much CBD is in the flower. This figure is usually given in a percentage. For example: If Lifter has 19.8% CBDa โ thatโs CBD in its preheated state (cannabidiolic acid). With 1000mg in a gram, we can say that every gram of Lifter has 198mg of CBD.
Decide how much flower you want to smoke or vape. Then guess the right amount, or if you want to be really accurate, measure it out on a set of electronic scales. Half a gram would be 99mg of CBD. A quarter-gram just under 50mg (for this Lifter strain).
This precision is not a requirement. We consider smoking or vaping CBD like micro-dosing. Itโs nice to know how much CBD youโre getting (give or take a couple of milligrams). But if trying for a perfect dose, you may like the accuracy of weighing your flower, or simply taking CBD in an oil, edible or capsule.
Things to remember:
- Every strain will affect everyone differently.
- Since strains have differing ratios of CBD, consumers can try out a variety to determine what works best for them.
- Some people may be more sensitive to THC than others even in low amounts.
- Start off by consuming low doses of high CBD cannabis flower.
- A low dose can be one to two inhalations from a joint, vaporizer or water pipe.
- While it isnโt an exact science, the slower you go, the better you can determine your tolerance for CBD.
CBD-rich flower boasts robust relaxing effects that can benefit users with its mellowing effects.
Buying hemp CBD flower solely based on a higher CBD content should not be your first priority. If you’re buying liquor, do you always opt for diesel grain alcohol given its high alcohol percentage? Try different strains to discover the effects of CBD-rich hemp flower, which can enhance the overall experience.
13. Can you fail a drug test due to CBD flower?
We cannot make any claims except to say that in all drug tests, CBD is considered to be undetectable in saliva or urine tests. There does, however, remain the rare instance that the trace amounts of THC in hemp may be detected. All of our CBD hemp flowers comply with all applicable regulations regarding minimal (less than 0.3%) THC content as required by law.
So can you fail a drug test? This question has two parts.
- One is how sensitive is the test procedure being used?
- And does your employer have a zero-tolerance policy?
The answer to the first question requires you to know how the test is being conducted and to what degree it’s accurate. Since CBD hemp flower is certified as industrial hemp, there can be as much as 0.3% THC in the product. Very few testing facilities are sensitive enough to detect this level but some most definitely are. If your employer will fail you for 0.3% THC or less, then we would not suggest using this product.
Research has found that THC can be detectable in your system for up to 30 days, but it’s usually only present in heavy cannabis users after the first week. It’s also important to know where you are getting your CBD flower from and if they have 3rd party lab tests that indicate the THC levels. Some CBD products might contain more than the 0.3% THC legally allowed. If you are concerned about THC levels, it is our opinion that it is not worth risking failing a drug test by using CBD products that contain THC.
14. What Are The Best CBD Flower Consumption Methods?
There are two main ways to consume CBD flower and an additional third that is less popular.
1. Smoke CBD Flower. If you were ever a marijuana smoker or still are, then you know what to do. Simply grind it up, roll yourself a nice CBD joint, and light up. This is what most users are doing because it doesnโt take much in terms of equipment or cost. We love CBD prerolled joints. I recommend buying one of these next time you order RESTART CBD.
NOTE: Roughly 40% of CBD users are also THC users. The comfort of grinding up a CBD and THC flower together makes the consumption process easier.
2. Vape CBD Flower. Herb vaporizers are another way of getting your CBD dose with flower. Vaping is safer than smoking if youโre worried about lung health, and itโs potentially more cost-effective.
When smoking, you always lose some CBD, that burns away at the end of your joint. This isnโt so with vaping, as devices just heat the flower. Cooking the bud is enough to activate the cannabinoids and transfer them to vapor form, but youโll never lose out on any cannabinoids.
Another advantage of vaping your CBD buds is that you arenโt burning anything and putting it into your lungs. Thereโs always some level of downside to that, however small compared to tobacco. With vaping, you can take bigger draws and stronger hits, which gives you more chance to become immersed in a strainโs terpenes and flavonoids. You may also get some added sublingual effects when the vapor is in your mouth.
Vaping CBD flower generally feels smoother and is very effective. The only thing is, youโll need a vaporizer that will heat up your flower but not burn them. While this is an initial investment, people find it is very worthwhile. Note: This is NOT the same as vaping with CBD vape pens, which uses a concentrated form of CBD. Youโll need different equipment and ingredients to create vapor from CBD oil or CBD vape juice.
3. Eat or drink it. You can actually digest CBD flowers directly. Not everyone will like how it tastes, and itโll take longer to hit you, but it definitely works. You can also consume CBD flower as a tea, decarb it to cook with or make CBD butter from the flower buds.
4. CBD Hemp flower is perfect for making your own edibles, topicals and oils. Youโll need to decarboxylate the flower by heating it in the oven, before infusing into an oil or baking with it. To get more from your CBD-rich hemp flower, we suggest using coconut oil, as itโs rich in MCTs. These compounds increase CBDโs bioavailability, making for a more potent extract.
15. What are the CBD and THC levels of your Hemp Flower?
All RESTART CBD hemp is U.S. grown by licensed growers. All products are 0.3% THC or less and the CBD% ranges from 10% to 27% depending on the strain. Don’t forget to check the lab tests.
